STUDYING IN THE UNITED STATES IN EARLIER AGE
It is more likely that a younger child will learn new languages faster and adopt to a new environment better. From kidnergarten to middle school a child is allowed to enroll only in CIS approved PRIVATE schools with an F-1 visa. A high school student is allowed to enroll in a CIS approved public school for 12 months with an F-1 visa. However, after the 12-month period has passed, the student will need to enroll in a private school. Even if the student enrolls in a public school, he/she will need to pay the school although the tuition will be lower than that of the private schools. He/she will need to get a new I-20 issued by the new school and will also need to notify the immigration service center. It is recommended that a child should come to the United States before the last year of middle school. That way, he/she may have some time in high school to learn English and get more comfortable with the academic settings, and life in America in general. It will be easier for him/her to adjust to college life. Usually a new academic year starts in late August or early September in the United States. High schools are 9th grade to 12th grade. Many students prepare to apply for colleges in the beginning of their senior year (12th grade). Grades and GPA (grade point average) from 9th grade to 11th grade are important factors in selecting college applicants. Many prestigious colleges also consider SAT(scholastic aptitude test) scores to be important factors in choosing their college prospectives. Besides academic achievements, colleges also factor in the applicant's community involvements or extracurricular activities. Therefore activities such as volunteering in hospitals, homless shelters, or even involvement in sports teams are also important.
CHOOSING MAJORS THAT HAVE GREAT FUTURE POTENTIALS
Once one goes to college, there are so many majors to choose from, but serious consideration should be given toward majors that will lead to great employment opportunites.
Anything that is related to the healthcare field is and will be hot. Some obvious healthcare professionals are doctors, registered nurses, nurse practictioners, professional nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists, audiologists, and the list goes on. These types of occupations are in short supply, therefore, you will be have an easier time getting a green card through these professions.
Also the field of computer programming is also in high demand. You may have easier time finding willing employers who will be happy to apply for an immigration petition for you. Of course, there are many more occupations that are in demand in the employment world right now. Choosing the majors that lead to these types will secure the future.
ADVICE GIVEN TO FOREIGN STUDENTS WHO WANT TO STUDY & WORK IN THE UNITED STATES
JOB OPPORTUNITES/OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH F-1 VISA
Employment provides an opportunity to gain practical experiences and help one's family financially. However, a foreign student must provide evidence that the finacial needs were unforeseen and extraordinary cases. In addition to that, the student has to get approval from the immigration office before he/she can begin her employment.
ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
The F-1 student may be employed for less than 20 hours on campus during the school session. Students may work full-time during vacations if they are planning to register for the next term. On-campus employment means any employment performed on the premise of the schools or at an affiliated off-site location. Common on-campus employment includes the school libray, cafeteria, bookstores, etc. The employment may be part of student's scholarship.
OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
There are two types of off-campus employment that are work-study programs: Cooperative (co-op) training programs and Curricular Practical Training. Students must complete at least nine months of study or be enrolled in graduate studies that require immediate participation in curricular practical training. If a student works full-time in the curricular practical training, he/she will be ineligible for post-completion practical training at the academic level.
PRE-COMPLETION PRACTICAL TRAINING
This is also an off-campus employment that is a training in a field related to studies. This is limited to up to 20 hours during the school session and the hours used in this training will be deducted from the hours allowed for post-completion practical training.
EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION BASED ON SEVERE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP
When a foriegn student applies for a student visa, he/she has to provide financial evidence that he/she does not have to work while he/she pursues studies in the United States. However, due to changes in financial situations of the financial sponsor, the student must apply for permission to work off-campus in any job of the student's choosing for 20 hours per week and full -time if the school is not session. Employment based on economic hardship will not affect the pre- and/or post-completion practical training. In order to qualify for this, the student must have completed one year of study and maintained good academic standing.
